Data Table 1. Effect of Various Levels of Molarity of Acid on the Speed of Reaction
Concentration (milliliters of gas per minute)
Molarity of Acid Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average
0.5 M 2.7 1.98 2.04 2.16
1 M 18 19.14 19.78 18.97
2 M 35.43 33.09 33.33 33.95
This data table shows the effect of various levels of molarity of acid on the speed of reaction. The same amount of HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) and MgCO₃ (Magnesium Carbonate) was used in all trials. In each trial we dropped 0.1 Gram of MgCO₃ into 5 milligrams of HCl and put a stopper on the test tube and putting a tube coming out of the stopper under a tube of water using the Water Displacement Method.
This data table shows the Effect of Various Levels of Molarity of Acid on the Speed of Reaction. To obtain this data, we used the same amount of HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) and MgCO₃ (Magnesium Carbonate) was used in all trials. In each trial we dropped 0.1 Gram of MgCO₃ into 5 milligrams of HCl and put a stopper on the test tube and putting a tube coming out of the stopper under a tube of water using the Water Displacement Method.
Our initial prediction of the effect of the changed molarity of the acid (or rather, the increased concentration of the acid) was that the increased concentration would cause the reaction to happen faster, which would mean that the MgCO₃ would dissolve faster, meaning that more gas would be produced. Using the Water Displacement Method, that would mean that the grams of gas produced per minute would increase more the higher the molarity got if our prediction was correct.
Our prediction turned out to be correct. The higher the molarity of the acid that we used, the faster the reaction happened. For instance, in our control trial the 0.5 Molarity acid produced 2.16 Grams of gas per minute, and in our second Experimental Trial, we used 2 Molarity acid and the MgCO produced 33.95 Grams of gas per minute. Our experiment may not be completely valid because in the first Experimental Trial for 2 Molarity acid we used a broken chunk that we poured into the text tube, making more surface area for the HCl to affect.
