Romeo and Juliet Essay on Fate

Even though no one likes it, bad luck exists and there is no way to avoid it. Not everything can go the way you want. If something random happens to someone, and it favors them, then this is good luck. Likewise, if something unexpected happens to someone and it is unfavorable then it would be bad luck. "Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved,” this quote means that we have the power to change our destiny thus changing our fate. When Romeo first meets Juliet he knows that she is a Capulet, and still goes on to love her thus changing his fate for the worst. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet shows that fate is in control, but also that it often uses the characters fatal flaws to deepen the predicament.


In the first place, Romeos fatal flaw is that he does things without thought or care. From the very beginning of the story, he does things with out thinking of what trouble he could get into. Such as when the Capulet serving man was sent out to invite people to Capulets feast, he asks Romeo to read it out because he cannot read. Romeo reads out the invite list, but also decides to the to the feast himself, knowing that the Capulets are a foe to his side, the Montague. Secondly Romeo and Tybalt battle out of rage, which worsens the situation because Romeo ends up killing Tybalt. Romeo knew that it would cause some damage in his current state with Tybalts cousin, Juliet. After realizing what he has done Romeo regrets his mistake and says, “O, I am fortune's fool!" (3.1.142). Finally when Romeo had gotten to the Capulets crypt, instead of being in such a rush to die he could have analyzed Juliet’s body more thoroughly because he says
Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath,
Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty.
Thou art not conquered. Beauty’s ensign yet
Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks,
And death’s pale flag is not advanced there-
(5.3.92-96) Which would have revealed some secrets then the
