An Analysis of Digging

This five page paper explores the book by Seamus Heaney. While the book on the surface concerns farm life, it has much deeper symbolic meaning. One of the more interesting of these is the author's goal of literary achievement that must be accomplished by digging up the most appropriate words to flesh out his work. This metaphor extends to Heaney's father and grandfather, as they labor in the fields digging potatoes and peat. In comparison the author toils at the keyboard digging out words. Both pursuits are based on the need to survive. One source is listed.
