Once the tide of industrialization overtook the United States, sentiments quickly changed from tolerance to discrimination as Americans felt socially and economically threatened by what had come to be looked at as an invasion: People held fast to the notion that immigrants were quickly absorbing jobs meant for indigenous United States citizens. Despite the ebb and flow of cultural diversity, these attitudes perpetuated throughout subsequent decades and into the new millennium, with the workplace displaying some of the most uncivilized behavior.
